Pregnancy: Your first lesson in embracing change
Motherhood is a journey of constant transformation, and the art of letting go begins the moment you find out you're pregnant. Even during those early stages, you start to experience the subtle shifts that prepare you for the larger changes to come. Your body begins to change, becoming less mobile as your pregnancy progresses. You may need to give up certain foods—like my beloved cheeses!—or habits like smoking and alcohol. Even hobbies that once brought you joy might need to be adjusted to fit your new reality. In this way, pregnancy is your first lesson in embracing change, nudging you to adapt and explore new possibilities. Whether it's discovering a new love for healthy foods or finding gentler ways to stay active, these early adjustments set the stage for the deeper transformations of motherhood.
The Postpartum Transition: Embracing Your New Body
The moment your child enters the world, you realize that change isn't something that happens once—it's an ongoing process. Your body continues to evolve as you recover from childbirth. Even two years later, I still feel the effects: my abs aren't as strong as they once were, and my pelvic floor muscles need extra care. But this period of physical recovery also opens the door to new practices. Many women, begin their yoga journey during pregnancy or after giving birth. What starts as a way to regain strength often becomes a lifelong companion, offering not just physical benefits but also mental and emotional support.
Changing Friendships: New Bonds and Old Ties
Motherhood also reshapes your friendships. Those who don't have children may start to feel like strangers, unable to fully grasp the physical and psychological challenges of early parenthood. Their worries might seem trivial—like complaining about a rainy vacation when you'd love nothing more than three uninterrupted days with your partner or a good book. But as some friendships fade, new ones emerge. Motherhood brings with it a unique opportunity to form deep, authentic connections with other mothers who understand your journey. These friendships, built on shared experiences and mutual support, often become some of the most meaningful relationships in your life. It's also a time when you might reevaluate old friendships, realizing that perhaps they weren't as solid as you once thought if your friends aren't there for you during this challenging time.
Letting Go of Your Old Lifestyle
Another aspect of letting go is the shift in your personality and lifestyle. If, like me, you've always been a freedom-loving, spontaneous person, you might find it difficult to accept the structure that motherhood requires. I had to learn the hard way with my first daughter that my previous lifestyle wasn't sustainable. I needed to bring more order into my daily life. Now, I find myself longing for the structured environment of home during holidays, where I have the support and routine that allows me to maintain my hobbies and healthy habits.
Redefining Holiday
Motherhood also changes your perspective on holidays. I used to be someone who loved to travel the world, staying in hostels and exploring remote places. Today, my idea of a perfect holiday has shifted dramatically. I now cherish our family trips to Kinderhotels in the German or Austrian mountains, where our kids are entertained, and we parents can indulge in great food, wellness facilities, and stunning nature. These experiences have deepened my love for the mountains and hiking, showing me that I don't need to travel far to find beauty and new experiences.
Letting Go of Old Nutritional Habits
Letting go extends to your nutritional habits as well. Pregnancy and motherhood often lead to a more conscious approach to food. Knowing that you're nurturing a life inside you makes you more aware of what you're putting into your body. Later, as you strive to be a good role model for your children, you naturally start eating healthier, avoiding fast food and sweets in favor of a balanced diet. You become more creative in the kitchen, trying new recipes that ensure your family is eating well. You also realize that your health directly impacts your ability to care for your children, so you prioritize your well-being in a way you might not have before.
Mindfulness Meditation: A Tool for Letting Go and Embracing Change
A powerful tool for letting go of what no longer serves you while embracing life's unexpected turns is mindfulness meditation. This practice involves paying close attention to the present moment without judgment, helping you develop a sense of calm and clarity. Mindfulness meditation has been shown to reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and increase self-awareness—benefits that are invaluable during the often overwhelming journey of motherhood. In my classes, mindfulness meditation is a central pillar, offering a safe space for mothers to reconnect with themselves and find peace amidst the chaos. I invite you to experience these benefits for yourself in one of my classes, where you'll learn to embrace change with curiosity and compassion.
Motherhood is a constant dance of letting go and embracing change, of adapting and growing. It's a journey that challenges you to redefine yourself, your relationships, and your life. But through it all, it offers the incredible gift of transformation, opening your heart and mind to new possibilities and deeper connections.
